For anyone planning a wedding comes this list from John Scalzi on how to enjoy the wedding and the marriage. Beautiful stuff

I will note that as an entirely impartial observer, Patrick and Clare seemed to get everything right. :)

Courtesy of Steveg comes this link to an exceedingly cool steampunk recumbent trike.

Yes the thing would be damned heavy but even so, WANT! :)

Had a very pleasant ride with Patrick yesterday, followed by an OK game of the WWII variant of Wings of War.

Granted that it may be unfair to dismiss this variant after only one game but it just didn't seem to work as well. I think that both of us definitely prefer the WWI variant and I'm not all that likely to buy more of the WWII version.

Yesterday Fuse Recumbents serviced the trike for me and remounted the fairing (including a new layer of plastic to keep it from scratching the paintwork again).

While that was happening I took a long walk down t Commonwealth Place to see the Dreams on Wheels cycling exhibition put on by the Danish Embassy. Many cool bikes and presentations on how to get cycling infrastructure right.

Today I slept in and then rode up to see [livejournal.com profile] dalekboy and [livejournal.com profile] shazgirl in the afternoon. Much pleasant conversation ensued before encroaching darkness turned me into a pumpkin.

The fairing isn't folding as far forward which is making mounting/dismounting awkward. Will have to look at adjustments for that but not sure what will work best at the moment.

Back in October I posted about a stolen bike that belonged to a lovely lady who was on the Adelaide to Melbourne ride with me

Well, it has been found and the lady has her beautiful bike back. Yay!

In other news it was only a matter of time before the new personal trainer had me doing the plank. Twice this morning, for 45s each time, so I'm quite pleased by that.

eee!

I picked up one of the Asus eees yesterday. My thinking is that this would be an ideal touring device as it is:

a. small and therefore packable into a regular pannier;
b. solid state and therefore less subject to shock;
c. cheap and therefore less of an issue if something does go wrong.

Whilst I'm on the subject of Australian geographical oddities, [personal profile] dalekboy is the only person I know who might have been to the Surveyor General's Corner where the SA, WA, and NT boundaries meet. Apparently fewer people have visited this spot than have visited the South Pole.

So, have you been there? Got photos?

On account of being kind of busy I didn't get a lot of photos on Saturday but the best of the bunch are beneath the cut.

Largeish photos here... )

Arrived at Patrick's place about 10ish to find that whilst he wasn't panicking over the torrential rain he wasn't entirely calm either.

More or less what happened next... )

It was supposed to be an outdoor wedding dammit! There is a contingency plan but I was so hoping for the couple's sake that it wouldn't be needed.

I've also spent the last couple of days making sure that I wouldn't be sick today - no riding*, resting inside, lots of hot drinks - so that I'm up for my best man duties. I'm still taking a pack of strepsils along anyway just in case something does start happening to my throat.

Last night spent chatting, eating pizza, and playing computer games with the groom and other friends. Well, I played 10 pin bowling with a Wii and enjoyed watching many people play Guitar Hero on an X-Box. I rapidly observed that Guitar Hero requires far too much hand eye coordination & reflexes for me.

*I'll worry about my riding quota for April later.

Well I was going to join [livejournal.com profile] rdmasters, and possibly [livejournal.com profile] leecetheartist, on his ride to work this morning.

But not if I'm going to drown out there. I can't afford to get sick this week and riding in the rain is a good way to make that happen.

[livejournal.com profile] rdmasters and [livejournal.com profile] leecetheartist just won the Marge Hughes (Mumfan) award.

I am incredibly pleased by this, and deeply sorry I missed the awards ceremony because of it. Richly deserved, photos later.

Cool!

Two very cool things happened today at Swancon.

First was the live commentary on the Dalek episode of the new Doctor Who by the scriptwriter Rob Shearman as interviewed by Ian Mond.

Second, and possibly cooler still*, was hearing that two of my very good friends [livejournal.com profile] rdmasters and [livejournal.com profile] leecetheartist are the fan guests for next years Swancon.

Huzzah!

Sometime ago I spoke about the potential for freaking people out inherent in Miyuki-chan in Wonderland.

[livejournal.com profile] cheshirenoir has just discovered the truth of it. Bwahahahaha! My work here is done! :)

Last night [personal profile] shazgirl, [personal profile] lilysea, and I enjoyed a superb meal at Firestone (a newish pizza restaurant in Dickson) to celebrate [personal profile] shazgirl's birthday.

So, Happy Birthday!

Reminder to all in Canberra that, barring rain, I'll be in Gundaroo for pizza around 12ish. For Anyone who wants to join me there the drive out along the Sutton Road should be fairly pleasant. If you let me know you're coming in advance I might bring some card games along...

Of course, there is also the option of joining me at the Acton Ferry Terminal around 9ish for the ride. :)

aka first Saturday of the month, being the anointed day for the Canberra Mob to go for a group ride. Among the many things I like about group rides is when a stronger rider is leading the group and I have to work harder to keep up. At the same time, chatting to the other riders can distract me from the extra effort and the Ks just fly by.

Today has been quiet - I've punched out more than 200Ks in the last week with no real rest days so I was overdue. OTOH I was only 7Ks short of target at the end of January and thus far February is looking good.

Went for a light recovery ride yesterday around the wetlands end of Lake Burley Griffin (about 20Ks) with another friend. As we were coming up on the Carillion (near the HMAS Canberra and the Merchant Marine memorials) we passed a family on their bikes.

My friend reports that after I passed one of the kids looked at the trike and said "Not Fair!"

Sometimes the trike is worth it just for the reactions it gets from kids. :)

Rode out to Gundaroo with a friend this morning and we stopped on the way at a pottery gallery which had some really nice bits. After that we had guilt free pizza at the Cork Street Cafe*

A different route home led us to a stretch of the old Federal Highway which had no traffic to speak of. It was almost like a private cycle path.

I'll do a longer ride report later but right now I need to log my 86Ks on bike journal, stretch, and shower.

EDIT 28/1 : Some more below the cut, photos to come.
More about the ride... )
*Defined as any pizza at least 40Ks away by pedal power. :)

 Oh what a beautiful day!

Cool but not cold, a glorious blue sky, riding in good company along the beautiful views that are Lake Burley Griffin.

There are days when you couldn't pry me out of Canberra with a crowbar.

Today is one of them.

Well I've touched up the frame where the fairing was and I am now waiting for it to dry. The touch up paint comes in a little bottle (about the size of nail polish I think) with the brush attached to the lid.

Continuuing with the theme of mockery by the rain gods there were a few spits whilst I was cleaning the frame first so I've dragged the trike back inside for this bit.

I haven't ridden anywhere this weekend - I felt really tired on Friday night and wasn't much better on Saturday. Speaking of which, apologies to [livejournal.com profile] lilysea for my ever so slightly antisocial behaviour at the chinese restaurant. I really should have stuck around but I just wasn't up for it.
