Good news: I've authorised the second major payment for the NZ tour. I'll only need to cough up for the extra accommodation and then its done.

Bad news: I think I need a new laptop. As of Friday night, boot life of the current one is like playing russian roulette...

Apart from Fujitsu are there any laptops on the market with the optical device in a modular bay?  Ideally with a swappable battery accessory so that I can simultaneously
a) cut down on the mechanical power demands by removing the bit that whirrs around at high speed; and
b) Increase endurance by replacing it with additional battery.

I really like that capability in the fujitsu's (particularly when I watch anime on long flights...), but having an alternative to consider would be nice.

I believe that IBM used to do this, but I'm not sure if they were easily swappable or whether it was an order-time decision.

I was looking for hot-swappable but I'll check IBM out, thanks for the tip.

IBM are still hot swapable. You would need to order the extra battery though. IBM Now called Lenovo.

Cool, thanks for that.

I expected to order the extra battery separately - I had to with the fujitsu's so it isn't a surprise
