My current tyres are a set of Schwalbe Marathons and thus far they're living up to their name. According to BikeJournal I've had 4000Km out of them so far and I've probably got another 500 - 1000 Km left on them, although handling is starting to get a bit twitchy as the tread smooths out.

Overall I'd recommend the Marathons as a good balance of performance and durability.

Whilst I've been busy retagging news of the weird posts I've been re-reading older posts that I wanted to refresh my memory of.

In the comments thread to a 5 questions meme, [livejournal.com profile] vegetus wistfully observed "now if my legs weren't too short for a trike".

This is where I point out that Europe is recumbent heaven generally, that the UK is the home of Trice specifically, and that the 35" minimum x-seam of the Trice Q & T is shorter than Greenspeed manage for the small-frame GTs...

Also, the prices for a Trice look a lot cheaper when you're already being paid in sterling. :)

'BentRider Online is reporting that a new record (50.389Km) has been set by Gert Jan Wijers for the hour.

And this year seems to be the year for Australian Velomobiles - the latest offering is Trisled's Avatar which looks just wonderful.

It is impossible to follow any cycling website or blog without the Great Debate on Helmets popping up sooner or later. Usually several times and it is best to wear an asbestos suit whenever it happens. :)

Having said that, the latest incarnation on EcoVelo is quite civilised, well worth reading, and has referenced a fascinating post on the How We Drive blog.

The article is highly recommended but this quote puts both the debate, and the arguments on both sides, into perspective (and is a timely reminder on how the scientific method works):

"The reason nobody knows for certain is that only one method exists for us to get a definitive answer: the experiment. If we took a large number of bicyclists and randomly made one-third ride with helmets, one-third ride with fake helmets (the placebo) and one-third ride with no helmets (the control), then after a couple of years we could count the dead and get the answer we are hoping for. Sadly, however, there are some fairly obvious ethical difficulties with this plan!"

...People would have been surfing on Lake Burley Griffin!

Any bets on the wind direction reversing before I go home so I get a headwind both ways?

Here is the leadin to Treadly's latest post with the all-too-appropriate title of Juvenile Tools

I really had to tone down my language on this posting. It’s considerably shorter now that I’ve calmed down a bit and taken out all of the F-words…

After reading it, I'm not surprised. As Treadly notes, this should be treated as premeditated, attempted, murder although it probably won't be.

I will agree with the comments made over there: most cyclists and most drivers share the road in a responsible, respectful manner and this is to be encouraged. The problem is that when this doesn't happen the cyclist is often the one treated, unjustly, as a second class citizen.

One flat tyre this morning, another one coming soon. I may do a pre-emptive tube replacement tonight if the valve holds up until then.

First the good news: ARIA the ANIMATION arrived today! Yay!

Now the bad news: I lost my jolly roger from the trike and I don't know where! Boo!

I have dry feet. The fairing rocks.

It turns out I'm more likely to get wet from underneath than from above...

Still at work and I just heard thunder...

The latest Greenspeed newsletter has more information on the development of the Glyde velomobile (and over which I will stop drooling any time now). Apparently the Pedal Prix competitions provided some of the R & D opportunities.

As I recall from some interesting conversations (well, I enjoyed them at least :) ), I believe [livejournal.com profile] nevryn was involved in the Pedal Prix (or something similar) some time ago.

100 Rides

Well I just passed 5000Kms for the year. This puts me ahead of last year but still way behind target for this year. I will need 100 rides of 25Km in the remainder of this year to reach target...

May I just say that winter sucks and daylight savings rocks. I also suspect I will be eating a great deal of guilt free pizza on coming weekends. :)
arcadiagt5: (Open Road!)

66.6Kmh. I probably hit that coming down Red Hill, I don't usually get more than 50 odd off Mount Pleasant.

And, yes, I did both yesterday. :)

Went for a great ride with a friend this morning wrapping up with brunch at Bagels. Beautiful blue sky, a bit windy, but also a reasonable temperature.

Less than half an hour after getting home it is raining, hard, and thunder has been heard...

First there was the issue with banning recumbents from the Around the Bay in a Day event (later rescinded).

Now comes their campaign to have Beach Road be a clearway on the weekend using a highly dubious (and more than slightly hypocritical) argument.

Treadly's analysis of this argument is superb and you should go make with the clicky now, but this bit is too good to pass up quoting:

You can’t really have it both ways: everywhere else cyclists are outnumbered by cars and in spite of that we assert the legal right to claim our space on the road. But on Beach Rd, BV wants to negate the argument: there cyclists outnumber cars (7,478 to 2,563 in their most recent survey), so bikes should squeeze the cars out.

...but not, alas, for me. :)

Peter Heal and Michael Priest from the Canberra Mob were able to chat about the joys of recumbents on ABC Canberra radio last week and the ABC website even has a photo here.

Interbike is one of the biggest bike shows in the world and naturally 'BentRider Online are providing coverage from the perspective of the comfy chair.

Many shinies on display this year, but the Greenspeed Glyde velomobile looks fabulous.

I'll try to stop drooling now. :)

Morning: A good gym session and a nice ride to work under a beautiful blue sky. A bit windy but you can't have everything.

Lunchtime: Weather looks to be turning grim, cloud cover is in and it is attempting to rain with mixed success.

Evening: Wind, rain, and an oppressively dark sky. Courtesy of lights, rain jacket, fairing, and the garage remote the ride home wasn't too bad though but I'm not going out there again tonight. Pizza is coming to me I tell you!

It turns out that the 82.33MPH run by Sam Whittingham also qualifies for the .deciMach Prize.
arcadiagt5: (Open Road!)

The numbers aren't up on the official site yet, but there's a post on 'BentRider Online indicating that Sam Whittingham had a run at 82.3 MPH or 132.45 KPH. This may be a new world record and I'll provide more details as they come to hand.

Which, even with [livejournal.com profile] strangedave 's correction last time, is a speeding ticket anywhere in Australia. :)

EDIT 22/09/2008: The numbers are now up: 82.33MPH or 132.50 KPH and marked as a new record pending approval. Congratulations to Sam Whittingham on a superb ride!
